CEAPA/BALEAP Conference: EAP as a Glocal Language

28th May 2021 - 30th May 2021

CEAPA (China EAP Association) and BALEAP are excited to announce the first joint international conference at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China.

In the globalised academia, English has become a lingua franca, and an increasing number of educational institutions have adopted English as a medium of instruction (EMI). As this phenomenon is burgeoning all over the world, traditional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaching, which happens mostly in Anglophone settings, struggles to meet the needs of students who are studying in non-Anglophone contexts. Meanwhile, English language teaching in higher education in EFL settings is also undergoing a transition from English for general purposes to English for Academic Purposes. This change can be seen particularly in China, where many universities are undertaking a change from College English Teaching (CET) to EAP teaching. These two strands can perhaps merge at some juncture, where EAP becomes a Glocal language.

Academic Skills: Self-paced tutorials for university students

When you get to university, you’ll find you need to get through a lot of readings either from your reading list, or for wider reading in preparation for an assignment. These may be journal articles, chapters in edited books or chapters in textbooks. Many of these academic texts will seem quite difficult, especially to begin with. Don’t despair! You may not have to read every article on your reading list. If you learn how to preview your readings first, you can select those readings or sections of a reading that are most relevant to your needs. There are a range of strategies that you can use to make the task less overwhelming.

WEBINAR_Two sides of the same coin: Critical and Creative Thinking in the ELT classroom

Date: 28 January 2021

Time: 12:00pm UK time (see what time this is where you are)

Critical thinking and creative thinking are often presented as opposites because one involves convergent thinking and the other requires divergent thinking. However, I’d argue that they are two sides of same coin: one inspires the other. In this webinar, I’ll explore their relationship in the ELT classroom and illustrate how we can apply them with practical activities you can use in your teaching tomorrow. The session will also include ideas taken from the book ‘Critical thinking in ELT’ (National Geographic Learning) which was a finalist in the 2020 British Council ELTons awards.
